Actinic keratosis is a pre-cancerous skin condition that presents as a rough-feeling patch or plaque, ranging from tan to reddish and from flat to slightly elevated.
  • Risk
    - Anywhere from 0.2% to 20% will progress to frank squamous cell carcinoma over a number of years, depending on the series and location on the body
  • Usual Locations
    - Back of hands
    - Arms
    - Face

- Rim of ears
- Scalp
- Sun exposed areas
Many clinicians can diagnose actinic keratosis by careful observation.  However, the removal of a small sample from the affected area for analysis at a reputable pathology laboratory is required for absolute confirmation of the diagnosis, as other conditions can mimic it clinically.  A sample will be studied by a specialized pathologist before being conclusively diagnosed as actinic keratosis.
Actinic keratosis may be treated with topical medications or by a variety of minor surgical procedures.  Your doctor will decide which type of therapy is best for you.
