Rib Contusion or Fracture

1. Follow your doctor's instructions.
2. Take 3 or 4 deep breaths every hour.
3. Force fluids.
4. No strenuous activity, ie: sports, heavy lifting.
5. For the first 48 hours apply ice packs to the affected area for 10 - 15 minutes every few hours.
6. After 48 hours apply warm moist heat to the affected area for 10 - 15 minutes every few hours.
7. The pain will usually become worse around the 3rd to 5th day.
8. Rib injuries can take 5 - 6 weeks to heal, whether a fracture or contusion.
9. Return immediately for increased pain or shortness of breath.
10. We do not recommend strapping.
