Throat Cultures

Throat cultures are performed to rule out BETA HEMOLYTIC STREPTOCOCCUS GROUP A, which is the bacteria that causes rheumatic fever , skin and kidney problems.  Throat cultures take 48 hours to allow the bacteria to grow.

If your throat culture is positive for Beta Hemolytic Strep , we will call to let you know the same day we receive the positive results.

We will not contact you if the throat culture is negative.

If the throat culture is POSITIVE, take the prescribed medication for 10 days.  A repeat culture should be taken after 10 days of therapy if you have tested positive.

If the throat culture is negative for strep and you have already started antibiotics, just take the prescribed medication for 8 days only if instructed by your clinician.
